Lithium Universe has taken a major step forward in its solar panel recycling program, announcing a key technological breakthrough using its proprietary JESE (Jet Electrochemical Silver Extraction) process.

In recent trials with Macquarie University, JESE achieved 95.95% silver purity in just five minutes. This is comparable to Britannia silver at approximately 92.5% and just below bullion standard at 99.9%.

For comparison, a conventional electrochemical bath method over the same timeframe reached only 78.6% purity, with significantly higher levels of contaminants like aluminium and oxygen.

Under JESE, impurities were minimal at 4.05% total, primarily trace aluminium and oxygen. Heavy metals such as titanium, lead and bismuth were recorded at very low levels.

This result is a proof-of-concept milestone for Lithium Universe. It demonstrates that the company’s technology can deliver both high purity and rapid extraction from end-of-life solar panels.

With global solar panel waste projected to reach 78 million tonnes by 2050, efficient recovery of valuable metals like silver is becoming increasingly vital for both sustainability and resource supply. JESE’s speed and purity give Lithium Universe competitive positioning in the circular economy space .

Lithium Universe will now focus on optimisation studies to further improve the JESE process, refining operating parameters to boost purity closer to bullion standards.

Plans are underway for larger-scale, continuous pilot programs, which will also explore recovery of other high-value metals from photovoltaic cells.

Parallel research continues, including joint work with Macquarie University on Microwave Joule Heating Technology (MJHT) and grant applications to support expanding its solar panel recycling technologies.

This breakthrough complements Lithium Universe’s broader strategy, which includes:

Developing a green lithium carbonate refinery in Bécancour, Québec.

Pursuing circular-economy initiatives, particularly solar panel recycling, with silver recovery as a lead component given its high value.

Updates from optimisation study metrics including improvements in purity, throughput, energy consumption, and cost per unit of silver recovered.

Announcements of pilot-scale or commercial-scale recycling facilities or offtake agreements for recycled silver or other recovered materials.

Progress on regulatory, environmental, and grant funding fronts, especially where it enhances the economic and ESG profile of Lithium Universe.
